Electric Bike Report
Specialized Turbo Tero X 5.0 E-Bike Review 2023

Jun 2023 · Justin Taylor

Want one bike that will both get you to work in the city and let you hit the local singletrack on the weekend? When the Specialized Turbo Tero X 5.0 showed up at the office for review, we found ourselves asking: how are we going to handle this bike? At first glance, it’s an obvious

Highs
  • Extremely versatile: can be ridden as a Class 3 commuter, for bike packing adventures, AND on XC single track

  • Natural riding experience, thanks to the custom-tuned Specialized 2.0 motor

  • Very comfortable as a commuter, and comes set up with fenders + mounting options for a wide array of additional commuting/bike packing accessories

  • Handles well on cross country single track trails – better than we expected and we didn’t even take off the fenders

  • Great app performance with the Mission Control app and Mastermind TCD controller

  • Great range: we got 73.75 miles on ECO, averaging around 14.3 mph.

  • You can choose the power/components you want across the various Tero X models

Lows
  • As with the Turbo Vado, the magnetic charger is a little hard to seat when you go to charge the bike

  • The fenders rattled just a little bit on the XC trails – it would be nice to have a way to easily remove the fenders

Observations
  • A premium full suspension SUV electric mountain bike that blends commuting with cross country, trail, and high-speed performance. includes outstanding custom fenders, rear rack, a 1,000 lumen headlight, and brake sensitive rear light. Available in four frame sizes, two colors, and three trim levels (4.0, 5.0, 6.0). Mullet wheel setup with 29" front and 27.5" rear.

  • Excellent weight distribution and electronics integration, IPX6 water and dust rated. Lightweight, smooth, responsive Brose motor (custom made Specialized 2.2 Class 3 mid-drive offering 28mph top speed). Peak torque rating of 90nm, highly tunable motor performance with Mission Control smartphone app. Internally routed cables stay out of the way and look great.

  • Outstanding battery pack shape and mounting design, there's no need for a separate cover that adds weight and complexity, removal feels safe despite exiting downwards from the downtube. Magnetic charging interface is convenient and durable, fast 4 amp charger is compact and capable. TCD2 MasterMind color display is customizable, dimmable, has USB C charge port.

  • Above-average air suspension, 130mm RockShox Lyric Select+ fork and 120mm RockShox Deluxe Select+ rear offering compression and rebound adjust. Dropper seat post makes the bike approachable and Body Geometry touch points feel great (to me). Pointy kickstand can sink into soft terrain, long front fender may clip obstacles, relatively high price. Great dealer network.
