It is true, with all the wiz and fanfare around electric mountain bikes these days occasionally we still hear a little pessimism from the odd naysayer out there… Sure, there will always be your traditional let us say ‘naturally aspirated’ MTB riders out there who at times may have a different opinion on the modern age of e-Bikes with claims akin to; “They don’t handle that well,” or “They are too heavy.” And to be fair those statements have at […]

An e-MTB with an 80-mile range that gives you twice your power — at nearly the same weight — as a traditional trail bike.

There is no doubt that Specialized, with their top-of-the-range S-Works model, has set a standard that is absolute when it comes to e-MTBs

The Specialized Turbo Levo SL Comp Carbon is a sleek, light and very useable take on the e-bike. The motor might be less powerful than most, but it also has far less mass to push, it's smooth and the battery lasts really well. The spec – in particular the fork – holds it back on rowdy trails and the geometry verges on dated, but for flowy trails and long adventures, the 'superlight' e-bike concept is a winner.

Cheaper parts hold back a bike with otherwise excellent geometry, chassis and motor
One of the best ebike frames around, which rides light and feels close to a ‘normal’ bike
The 2.1 motor is super smooth with rapid engagement
SRAM’s Level T brakes struggle to stop this much weight
I don’t like Specialized’s wriggly Butcher GRID tyres
The motor lacks the sheer top-end torque of some

Only 240 watts. Only 38 pounds. Welcome to the gray area.

Over the past few months I’ve been hearing some chatter about a new Specialized e-bike rumored to tip the scales at only 38 pounds. As the brand was already leading the charge with lightweight e-bikes that didn’t come as a huge surprise, but weight aside, I knew very little about the bike until recently. Taking on a silhouette similar to the current Levo, which follows the form of the latest Stumpjumper, this new Levo SL looks familiar – on the surface anyway. However, upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the downtube and motor area are a bit slimmer … small

Specialized’s Turbo Levo FSR has set the benchmark for all round E-MTB performance, but what’s so great about it and what’s not? Guy Kesteven reports
Powerful, quiet and proven motor
Massive battery
Neat controls/app and excellent back up
Well balanced all round trail riding geometry with neutral set-and-forget suspension
Deserves tougher wheels and a fancier fork for the money
Carbon frame is impressively light but makes it expensive
