Bike Review | 2021 Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Expert

Oct 2020 · Spencer Johnson

The storied Specialized Stumpjumper EVO—arguably the most famous mountain bike model in the history of our sport—is back for 2021, and the newest incarnation feels more refined and adjustable than ever before. With a headtube angle that’s adjustable from 65.5 degrees all the way down to 63 degrees, and a bottom bracket with height adjustability from 32 millimeters of drop to a ground-hugging 39 millimeters of drop, the new Stumpjumper EVO Expert we tested comes with multiple geometry options that can radically change its personality on a wide variety of terrain. The 2021 Stumpjumper EVO certainly has retained some of the climbing characteristics of its previous iteration. Specifically, it’s a bike that is far better to climb in the seated position than hammering out of the saddle—a trait attributed to the FSR suspension platform, which gives impressive traction through chunky terrain while climbing in the seated position. While climbing in the seated position, my weight felt balanced between the front and rear wheels, allowing me to stay comfortable and in control on even the steepest of climbs. I found the lowest bottom-bracket setting to be the best for climbing, as it extends the chainstay dimensions, adding to its overall stability. When it came to dialing in the compression on the super-active Fox Float DPX2 Performance Elite shock, I preferred switching it into the middle setting on the climb switch to slightly stiffen the pedaling platform.

Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Review | More adjustable, more refined, & more versatile for 2021

Oct 2020

The EVO has always been the radical offshoot of the regular Stumpjumper. For 2021 though, Specialized has evolved its approach, creating a standalone model that it calls the 'Ultimate Trail Bike'. What's changed? And how does it ride? Read on for our review of the all-new 2021 Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Expert.

Highs
  • Insanely floaty suspension performance

  • User-friendly adjustable geometry

  • The new SWAT accessories are brilliant

  • Highly adjustable fork and shock package

  • Code RS stoppers deliver enormous braking power

  • Overall attention to detail

Lows
  • The sticky rubber and suspension are draggy

  • Rear tyre is on the light side for a hard-charging bike like this

  • We'd like to see a Star Ratchet freehub at this price

Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Pro 27.5 first ride review

Aug 2019 · Robin Weaver

The low-slung bottom bracket boosts confidence and fluidity when slinging the bike from corner to corner, but you need to time your pedalling to perfection with your feet so close to the ground (or stick it in the higher setting).. .

Highs
  • Taut feel through the frame and wheel/tyres makes for a really responsive ride considering the dimensions

  • Low and slack geometry makes for confident handling when the trail gets really steep

  • If you like low bottom brackets, the carbon Stumpy EVO won’t disappoint

Lows
  • Good, not great, spec for the price

  • The Butcher tyres aren’t the best when pushed hard on dry trails
