Summary
The Specialized Epic is a highly efficient and capable cross-country bike, praised for its updated Brain suspension platform, lightweight design, and improved geometry. It excels in technical terrain and climbs, though some riders find the Brain system polarizing and the bike can be harsh on rough trails. The Epic is often compared to other top-tier XC bikes like the Specialized Epic EVO and Rocky Mountain Element.
Updated Brain suspension platform for efficient and capable performance
Lightweight design with significant weight savings
Improved geometry for better stability and handling
Efficient power transfer and climbing ability
Confidence-inspiring in technical sections
Brain suspension system can be polarizing and difficult to adjust
Harsh ride on rough trails for some riders
High price point for some models
Limited size options for shorter riders
This is lighter than its predecessor, with a stiffer frame and suspension that’s more resistant to downforce from the rider when closed, with smoother and faster transitions to openBicycling
In our experience, this Epic has to be one of the best handling 100mm travel 29ers available.
The best way to describe the Epic is 'confidence inspiring.'
Without doubt one of the best race bikes I have ever ridden.
the Epic has been a mainstay of the cross-country racing scene since it blew things wide-open in 2003 with the Brain

It’s been a while since we’ve posted one of Fair Wheel Bike’s custom builds. But this crazy light Specialized Epic EVO proves that they’re still cranking out some incredible bikes in Arizona. Jason Woznick of Fair Wheel tells us that this bike was created not to make the absolute lightest bike possible, but to better […]

It’s fast, precise, smooth, and extremely efficient.

As cross-country bikes evolve, it's no surprise that the Specialized Epic Evo is already a step ahead. It adds travel and length, and loses one element.

Specialized has done a really good job of taking one bike and making it equally competitive for two different types of riders. If you search out the longest backcountry trails or like to get to the top of your local spot at record time, you may want to take the Epic Evo S-Works for a spin. Read our full review here!

Specialized's Epic Expert Carbon Evo is a satisfyingly fun and fast take on a less pointy kind of cross-country distance machine, but the Brain-equipped rear suspension can feel more idiot than intellectual and the spec is rather pedestrian for the cash. If you can get over that then it provides plenty of high tempo fun for those seeking distance and thrills.
