A comfortable and traction-rich ride, but the cramped rider position stymies climbing and descending poise for taller riders
Plus tyres offer extra traction, comfort and confidence on rough terrain
Dropper post and 1x drivetrain help you maintain your flow through undulating terrain
The XL bike is too cramped and low at the front, making steep climbs and descents awkward
With its small chainring, heavy weight and big tyres, the Fuse feels somewhat muted and unresponsive, even if it’s no slower in reality than the other bikes on test

Credit to the slack geometry, ample maneuverability, and a fork with plenty of travel.

The newly modernized Fuse hardtail just got a more aggressive spec, geometry and price point ... but not too aggressive.

Specialized's Fuse Comp 29 is a 130mm trail hardtail that blends balanced handling with some very neat features. It's got a very respectable spec list for a shop bought bike, but dedicated distance sluggers will find it too heavy and those after techy thrills will find the geometry a bit tame. The best mountain bikes you can buy for under £1,500 - full sus and hardtails Is it worth converting your mountain bike to tubeless?
