Electric Bike Report
Rad Power Bikes RadCity 5 Plus Review, 2023

Jan 2023 · Sam Gross

A sensible electric bike for sensible riders, the freshly redesigned Rad Power Bikes RadCity 5 Plus is a Dutch-inspired e-bike that’s thoughtfully designed to cart you and the things you need for the day safely and efficiently. In this Rad Power Bikes RadCity 5 Plus review, we take a look at how well this bike

Highs
  • The RadCity’s rear rack is one of the best. It’s bolted directly to the frame, has an EasyFit window for the Thule Yepp Maxi child seat and a high weight rating.

  • The handling is very, very nice. It’s very stable, balanced and predictable.

  • Like the predictable handling, the power from the 750W motor is nice and moderate at low speed with plenty of torque for climbing.

  • Rad’s got one of the best reputations in the affordable e-bike industry, so you can trust they’ll stand by their bikes.

  • We absolutely love the looks of Rad’s newest generation of e-bikes. They look much more grown up than the previous generation.

  • The NUTT hydraulic disk brakes are spectacular under hard braking. This bike set a new record for the best stopping distance of any e-bike we’ve reviewed.

Lows
  • The cable tidiness from the handlebars can be better. Instead of shortening cables where needed, they’re managed in zip-tied clumps that detract from the overall finish of the bike.

  • The dual display setup is a unique and useful design, but the left-hand display can be tough to read in direct sunlight.

Rad Power Bikes RadCity 5 Plus Review

Dec 2021

Price: $1999.00 | Model Year: 2021, 2022 | The classic high-step version of the proven RadCity hybrid electric bike featuring frame, wheel, brake, and battery upgrades for its 5th generation. Available in black only, this model comes in one frame size but offers an adjustable angle stem and extra long 390mm seat post. Ergonomic grips, hybrid tires, locking suspension fork, and optional suspension seat post provide comfort. The rear rack is now removable, and positioned so the saddle won't collide in low positions.

Observations
  • The classic high-step version of the proven RadCity hybrid electric bike featuring frame, wheel, brake, and battery upgrades for its 5th generation.

  • A growing fleet of mobile service vans and storefronts in the US, Canada, and Europe make trying, buying, and maintaining this ebike more convenient. Redesigned wire routing, motor power cable, and removable downtube cover improve serviceability and reliability. Puncture resistant reflective tires, motor inhibiting brakes with rear light activation, and larger displays with more precise battery readouts elevate safety and usability.

  • Hydraulic disc brakes require less hand effort, offer fit adjustability, and perform more consistently over time. Multiple rack attachment points and extensive range of cross-compatible accessories set this brand apart. Wide 11-34 tooth gearing makes starting and climbing easy. Sturdy chainring guide reduces chain drops and bottom bracket damage while keeping your clothing clean. Comes with flexible plastic fenders that stay fairly quiet.

  • Custom 750 watt geared hub motor is 1.4lbs lighter, eliminates magnetic drag, and offers 37% more torque than prior model year, but no longer regenerates when braking. The cost of the bike has increased a bit, and the battery pack design is not backwards compatible. The display does not have a USB charging port built in, and you can no longer adjust top speed. Updated controller is hidden inside the frame for durability and appearance.
