Rad Power Bikes RadExpand 5 Plus Review

Apr 2024 · Patrick Brady

A compact folding e-bike that has range for days and the upgrades fans had been asking for. It's been nearly two years since Rad Power Bikes released the first RadExpand 5 folding e-bike, but since that latest version they have clearly come a long way with this new version, the RadExpand 5 Plus. The standard

Highs
  • We got over 80 miles (and 7 hours) of ride time on a single charge thanks to the efficient 720Wh battery.

  • It has worthy upgrades of a ‘plus’ model: suspension fork, better brakes, new display, etc.

  • Pedal assist felt much more like natural pedaling than previous models largely due to the newly added torque sensor motor activation.

  • We think the bike would be a great option for RV’ers or those with limited space as the Radexpand folds up in just a few easy steps.

  • We love the enhanced fire safety with Rad Power’s new Safe Shield Battery, which features individual fire barriers for each cell, effectively preventing battery fire “runoff” and providing peace of mind.

  • Venture from the campground to the city with perks like integrated turn signals, front and rear lighting, fenders, and a rear rack, making it a practical choice for daily rides.

  • We found the RadExpand 5 Plus to climb hills well thanks to its 750W motor with 64 Nm of torque.

Lows
  • The estimated range on the display isn’t particularly accurate. We encourage switching it to the percentage readout instead.

  • We found the kickstand placement to be a slight irritation as the heel of our foot would randomly hit it on our rides (size 11 shoes and up).

Rad Power Bikes Radster Trail Review

Mar 2024 · Mike East

A new Powerful Motor, Safe Battery Technology, and All-Around e-Bike Versatility It's fair to say that Rad Power Bikes helped popularize fat tire e-bikes as we know them today. They don't seem to be content to churn out the same stuff year after year though. Our Rad Power Bikes Radster Trail review shows the company

Highs
  • Versatile and well-rounded, the Radster Trail is a compelling combination of comfort and capability that will appeal to a wide range of riders

  • One of Rad’s best motor experiences to date. The new 750W, 100 Nm of torque climbs hills easily, but it has very manageable power for any rider.

  • We love the enhanced fire safety with Rad Power’s new Safe Shield Battery, which features individual fire barriers for each cell, effectively preventing battery fire “runoff” and providing peace of mind.

  • Impressive range of over 75 miles on a single charge, achieved through the combinatin of a high-capacity 720Wh battery and an efficient torque sensor.

  • Better handling than most fat bikes. The 3”-wide tires are still very stable, yet feel livelier in turns than most 4”-tires.

  • Well-equipped for commuting, with integrated turn signals, front and rear lighting, fenders, and a rear rack, making it a practical choice for daily rides.

  • We like the increased e-bike security with the included proximity key fob (or backup password), providing an added layer of protection against unwanted use.

  • Braking felt solid thanks to the Tektro E350 Hydraulic Disc Brakes and 180mm rotors.

  • Practical range of gears. The large 50T chainring and 8-speed Shimano drivetrain worked well with the bike’s class 3 speed capabilities.

Lows
  • A bit nitpicky, but we would like to see an upgrade to the charger to at least three amps for faster re-charge times.

  • The front fender, resembling a short MTB-style fender, offers limited protection against water splashes, which might not be enough for commuters, potentially leading to a wetter ride in rainy conditions.

Rad Power Bikes Radster Road Review

Mar 2024 · John S. Bozick

A Peppy, Powerful, and Responsive Commuter with New Safety and Security Tech! As the first new model in Rad Power Bikes’ lineup since 2022, the Radster marks the next stage in the brand’s evolution. With two configurations, the Radster Road sticks to its roots as a commuter, while the Trail version adopts an off-road approach.

Highs
  • A more powerful and more responsive motor than we’ve seen on any previous Rad bikes! The Radster’s 750W hub motor features a torque sensor and 100 Nm of torque.

  • Impressive safety features including a potted Safe Shield battery, UL2271 and UL2849 certification, turn signals, and more.

  • The Radster maintains Rad’s trademark feel with steady, reliable motor output and thoughtful design.

  • An ergonomic, comfortable riding position with great visibility – all benefits of the bike’s Dutch influence.

  • Good ride stability and predictable handling with 29”x2.2” Kenda Kwick tires.

  • An uncommon extra layer of security with a keycard fob or password lock.

  • Offers speed/Class customization; can be adjusted between Class 1, Class 2, and limited or full Class 3 modes.

  • Looks are subjective, but we like the Radster Road’s signature, industrial-feeling aesthetic.

Lows
  • We found the Radster Road’s handlebar type and height to be somewhat mismatched, but this can be corrected (if needed) with a different stem and/or handlebars.

  • Something to be aware of: at 78 lbs with the battery installed (67.5 lbs without), the Radster Road is relatively heavy when compared to similar e-bikes.

Rad Power Bikes Radster Road E-Bike Review, 2024

Mar 2024

Price: $1999.00 | Model Year: 2024 | Rad’s latest commuter has a new design, improved motor, and unique battery tech. With this model Rad offers class 2 or class 3 speed rides.

Observations
  • Rad’s latest commuter has a new design, improved motor, and unique battery tech. With this model Rad offers class 2 or class 3 speed rides.

  • When it comes to Class 3 commuters, many suffer from one of a couple of drawbacks that keep them from fulfilling that speedy commuter role. Some aren’t stable enough at speed, so people slow down until they feel more confident, while some simply don’t have a gear big enough to allow the rider to pedal at 28 mph. Others say they deliver Class 3 speed but don’t have the power to reach 28 mph. The Rad Power Bikes Radster Road nips all of those issues with this excellent design.

  • Thanks to a 750W brushless, geared hub motor, 29-in. wheels and a 50x11t top gear, the Rad Power Bikes Radster Road can accelerate up to 28 mph with ease and once there hold that pace. Those 29-in. wheels make for a stable, confidence-inspiring ride. The trick to feeling comfortable at speed is for the e-bike to remain calm. It should be maneuverable, but shouldn’t feel twitchy and larger wheels offer a more stable ride because they generate more gyroscopic effect. I loved the handling on this e-bike.

  • With commuter e-bikes we often see the greatest value near the $1500 price point, but the Rad Power Bikes Radster Road squeaks in just under $2000 and every dollar is well-earned. From the 750W hub motor to the 720Wh Safe Shield battery, to the 8-speed drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes, this is a well-designed commuter. CHECK BEST PRICE

Rad Power Bikes Radster Trail Review, 2024

Mar 2024

Price: $1999.00 | Model Year: 2024 | I’m blown away with the new Radster Trail from Rad Power Bikes. This is an exciting new model that is as versatile as it is powerful. From the frame to the motor to the wheel and tire choice, this is a terrific new model from one of the most popular makers of e-bikes.

Observations
  • I’m blown away with the new Radster Trail from Rad Power Bikes. This is an exciting new model that is as versatile as it is powerful. From the frame to the motor to the wheel and tire choice, this is a terrific new model from one of the most popular makers of e-bikes.

  • The Radster Trail rolls on 27.5 x 3-in. tires, what they call a mid-fat. I like the 3-in. width because it handles better than 4-in.-wide tires. Sure, it loses some cushion, but the narrower tire improves the maneuverability, whether on-road or off of it. While this isn’t an eMTB, it does have the ability to take in dirt roads and some natural surface trails. I ran the tires at less than 20 psi and that combined with the 80mm-travel fork gave me a very comfortable ride any time I wasn’t on asphalt.

  • According to Rad Power Bikes, this new motor still delivers a maximum of 750W, like other Rad Power Bikes motors, but they increased the torque in the motor by 54 percent to produce 100Nm of torque. What that means is that this thing really moves uphill. The narrower tire is substantially lighter than the 4-in. rubber we see on all-terrain models, and that almost certainly helps the Radster Trail’s acceleration.

  • This is a true Class 3 e-bike (but ships as a class 2), able to achieve 28 mph and it has both the power and the gearing necessary to reach that speed. Here’s another reason to like the 27.5 x 3-in. tires: This e-bike handles really well at speed.
