Privateer 141

Nov 2024

Privateer's "trail bike" is not for the faint of heart nor the weak of limb

Highs
  • Well-rounded all-mountain and trail bike

  • Burly construction with oversized pivot hardware

  • External cable routing

  • Flip chip for wheel size and chainstay length adjustment

  • Planted and balanced at high speed in loose, rocky terrain

  • Buttery plush rear suspension

  • Confident, predictable front-rear balance

  • Surprisingly capable technical climbing ability

  • Direct-to-customer brand with good value

Lows
  • Heavy (over 37 pounds)

  • Ponderous and energy-sapping on smooth trails

  • Not nimble; feels heavy after a couple hours

  • No UDH

  • Not for casual trail riders

Review: Privateer 141 - The Adjustable Wrench of Trail Bikes

Jul 2024 · Matt Beer

The 141 is a burly trail bike that was designed with reliability in mind.

Highs
  • Ability to run either rear wheel size or shock type

  • Robust, straightforward hardware

  • Excellent rear wheel tracking

Lows
  • On the heavy side for a trail bike

  • Drivetrain can impose some undesired feedback at the rear wheel

  • Not UDH compatible

Mountain Flyer
Tested: Privateer 141

May 2023

Built for Speed, Privateer, amateur professional, racing for Team Mom and Dad—call it what you will but the idea is the same. Outside of pro mountain biking’s select upper echelon of well-paid, well-supported athletes, many if not most competitors are barely scraping by. This often means bumming rides to races, packing extra bodies into hotel rooms and cashing in favors when your gear needs servicing or replacement.

Highs
  • Value for money

  • High-end suspension (Fox 36 GRIP2, Float X DPX2)

  • Good tires (Schwalbe Hans Dampf/Magic Mary Addix Soft)

  • Stable at high speeds

  • Confident on descents

  • Planted feel

Lows
  • Heavy (34 lbs on XL)

  • Sluggish climbing

  • Poor maneuverability at slow speeds

  • Not playful

  • On/off brake feel (Magura MT5)

  • Externally routed cables

  • Not for beginners

Privateer 141 GX Pike review

Oct 2022

The Privateer 141 brings everything we liked about the 161 but puts it in a more trail friendly package. While it may not be the prettiest or lightest of bikes out there the Privateer 141’s user friendliness and excellent kit list, combined with its forward-thinking geometry result in a bike that's as versatile as it is fun, making it one of the best trail mountain bikes you can buy. Is this the ultimate trail bike?
