Kona’s New Hei Hei Isn’t Just an XC Bike Anymore - Mountain Bike Action Magazine

Feb 2026 · Ron Koch

We tested the new Kona Hei Hei CR cross-country bike with modern geometry, four-bar suspension, and trail-ready parts. Fast climbing and confident descending.

Highs
  • Excellent descending suspenion with smooth, well-controlled feel

  • Resists hard bottoming, encouraging rider to push boundaries

  • Terrain geometry and strong frame back predictable steering and straight-line stability

  • Many bottle and accessory mounts (nine) for hydration and storage options

  • Attainable price tag ($6299) and good value for the spec

Lows
  • Heavy at 30.4 lb, not competitive for racing in standard form

  • Maxxis Dissector tire not ideal as front tire, vague feeling on hard surfaces

  • Seat tube mount doesn't fit full-size bottle, accessory storage limited with two bottles

  • No internal frame storage

  • No cable port for shock remote

  • Well-appointed frame details

  • Keeps things fun

Lows
  • XC geometry, trail bike intentions

  • Heavy build weight

  • Lacks composure in rougher terrain

2025 Kona Hei Hei - Blurring Boundaries

Sep 2025

Kona's 10th Generation Hei Hei ditches the flex stay and welcomes more travel to become the perfect back country companion.

Highs
  • Playful and capable descending prowess

  • Lively and responsive ride with easy pop

  • Stiff chassis with excellent directional responsiveness

  • Plush suspension with good small bump compliance

  • Solid spec with top-end suspension, reliable hubs, mechanical transmission

  • Lots of bottle bosses and mounting options

  • Comfortable seated climbing position on technical singletrack

Lows
  • Pronounced pedal bob with shock open on smooth climbs

  • Seat tube angle feels slack on steep sustained climbs

  • Creak from forward shock mount bolt (sample size too small to confirm)

  • Low routing on non-drive side bulges out (though no contact)

  • Saddle-to-bar drop too aggressive for some (solved with riser bar)

  • Upper limit on high-speed technical terrain

  • Half a pound heavier than XC racers

2025 Kona Hei Hei Review: Tenth Time's a Charm

Jun 2025 · By Miles Arbour

Find our 2025 Kona Hei Hei review here after several months of singletrack, gravel, and loaded bikepacking where Kona was born...

Highs
  • Responsive and entertaining ride quality on all types of terrain

  • Fast like an XC bike but not a one-headed beast

  • Perfect mix of fast and stable, making for a perfect ultra-distance race bike or lightweight bikepacking rig

  • Large main triangle and plenty of mounting points for bolt-on cargo/bags

  • Extra space above the rear shock makes a perfect handle

  • Single build kit offers decent bang for your buck despite being expensive

Lows
  • Only one complete build kit (for now)

  • Expensive

  • Press-fit bottom bracket

  • Size jump between large and extra-large frame is awkward

  • Headtube cable routing/ports can be tricky for some handlebar bags
