Summary
The YT Industries Szepter is a highly capable and fun gravel bike that blends mountain bike and road bike characteristics, offering a unique ride experience. It excels on rough terrain and descents, thanks to its progressive geometry, RockShox suspension fork, and dropper post, making it a standout for adventurous riders. While it may not be the lightest or fastest on smooth gravel roads, its playful nature and confidence-inspiring handling have garnered widespread praise.

It is by far the most capable and fun to ride graveller I've ever swung a leg over.
The Szepter is a bold design, it represents a key part of the growing gravel spectrum that helps the genre truly become a bridge between mountain bikes and road bikes.
It’s a mountain biker’s gravel bike aimed squarely at having fun.

The YT Industries Szepter CORE 4 features a suspension fork, dropper post, and cool aero styling. Can this combination work, and how does it fare in our adventure gravel bike group test?
Absolute and uncompromising off-road performance
Incredibly fun and cool gravity gravel concept
Confidence inspiring on trails
Limited use case
No frame protection
A wider gear range would be a better fit for the off-road concept

I first sampled the YT Szepter gravel bike in San Clemente, USA, at the bike’s international debut late last year. It impressed me on all fronts and made mince meat of the route mapped out for us but an objective assessment would mean testing it here in the UK, too. The terrain on offer in and around the Surrey Hills – where I do the bulk of my off-road riding – is slower and more technical than the open expanses of California and I was keen to see how it would do in this predominantly wet and slippery terrain.

Are gravel bikes becoming light weight mountain bikes? Kind of. But also they're still gravel bikes. And super fun.

An upright bike that early indications show is surprisingly comfortable and fun to ride… at a good price
Clear sense of purpose (it’s a fun bike, not a race bike)
Good value
Confident handling
Heavy
Pigeonholed outside race and bikepacking gravel spheres

Gravel suspension has been knocking at the door for a while, could the Szepter be the bike to kick it down?
Very capable across a range of terrain
Comfortable riding position
The inclusion of fork and dropper post inspire confidence
Suspension fork and dropper post add additional servicing costs
Some riders may want larger tyre clearances
