Whyte 801 (2018) review

Oct 2017 · Guy Kesteven

The best-riding frame on test, but fork and other kit compromises are obvious on the trail. Buy if your budget can only stretch so far, but you still need something good enough to handle life on the trail

Highs
  • Sweet-riding trail frame with great geometry and UK-proof features

  • 1x11 transmission is simple, light and efficient

Lows
  • Budget fork hits its limits well before the rest of the bike

  • Square taper crankset and Tektro brakes are below par for the money

Whyte 801 (2017) first ride - MBR

Oct 2016 · Alan Muldoon

The Whyte 801 has all the attitude of the amazing 901 in a more affordable package.

Highs
  • Great shape and sizing make the 801 an instant hit. It won’t shake your fillings out like some entry-level hardtails.

Lows
  • The fork has 9mm QR dropouts, not the stiffer 15mm Maxle. No clutch rear mech to reduce chain rattle and the grips are too skinny.
