Summary
The Trek Fuel mountain youth bike is praised for its versatile and light trail capabilities, offering a balanced and maneuverable feel suitable for various terrains. Its suspension performance, particularly the RE:aktiv shock with Thru Shaft technology, is highlighted for reducing lag and improving ride quality. However, some reviews note it may be too conservative for aggressive riders and could benefit from a longer dropper post and more aggressive tires.
Versatile and light trail bike
Quick-responding ABP suspension platform
RE:aktiv shock with Thru Shaft technology
Balanced and maneuverable feel

The Fuel isn’t the biggest and baddest bike of the test. Instead it focuses on being the do-everything quiver killer.
Imagine taking the heart of an XC race bike and giving it the soul of a trail bike and you’d have the Fuel EX.
Not the quickest climber, but clever suspension and geometry provide a fun, fast and capable ride

A direct, punchy feeling trail bike that just wants to go faster. Buy if you like to mix big hills with plenty of fast, flowing trails
Well-specced, fun, agile and responsive trail bike
Heavier or more aggressive riders may want a stiffer fork and more progressive suspension, dropper post isn’t the best out there

While this Trek Fuel EX 5 may look like a roller skate on wheels, complete with disco-tastic 'anthracite' metallic grey finish and chunky platform shoes reminiscent of the Spice Girls’ heyday, it does cover a particular niche between ‘trail’ and ‘cross-country’, and it does it very well on a respectable budget. Take a look at the new Fuel EX and you will quickly see Trek has fully redefined the model. The 2016 Fuel Ex 29 was a step in the right direction, but it was a timid half-hearted step that left the rider wondering what if…? What if it came spec’d with a stiffer fork, more travel and a slacker headtube? The team at Trek delivered and the 2017 bike answers these questions. It now allows the use of 29” or 27.5+ wheels and is one of the stiffest frames in the category, featuring a totally new geometry that’s slacker and longer than its predecessor.
