Summary
The Trek Top Fuel is a versatile cross-country bike that excels both as a race day steed and a trail bike, thanks to its superb suspension performance and high-tech carbon chassis. It offers a balanced riding position, tight climbing capabilities, and is capable of handling severe trail challenges. However, some riders may find it skittish at first, and certain components like the saddle and QR15 lower could be improved.
Works well as a race day steed or trail bike
Superb suspension performance
More balanced riding position
Tight when climbing
Capable enough for severe trail challenges
Can feel skittish at first
Slightly lardy Bontrager Race WSD saddle
QR15 lower could be stiffer and more secure
If you can’t stamp your authority on the pack with this walletful of featherweight carbon and high-end parts, then it’s time to hang up your SPDs and go back to training wheels.
It’s capable enough to guide you through some pretty severe trail challenges without abandonment, and when given its head, it simply loves to run.
Possibly not since the days of John Tomac in the early 1990’s have we been treated to the sight of a mountain bike with drop bars.

Good downhill suspension performance for a cross-country race bike, but elsewhere it's hampered by pedaling feedback and a surprising lack of steering stiffness

Over the holiday week I met Trek’s Southeast demo guy, Tom Jenkins, at the IMBA Epic Santos Trails in Ocala, FL, for a solid 3+ hour cross country test of the new 2009 Trek Top Fuel 9.9 SSL. This course is an Epic for a reason.  There are more than 40 miles of singletrack, ranging …
