Markus Storck wanted a race frameset that has everything dialed to 11. His Aernario Platinum is proof it can be done. The 790g frame and 280g fork are also stiff, aero, and comfortable. Both Tour magazine, which has given the frame their highest ratings ever, and Road magazine, agree, it’s got everything.
In a certain sense, getting to the Aernario was easy. Storck’s Scenario was already the top dog when he started building toward the Aernario. Having your own frame as the benchmark makes things easier. So they upped the ante everywhere. The layup is precise, with high modulus carbon fiber heavily in the mix. Careful shaping is everywhere, for aerodynamics, stiffness, and comfort.
The aero shapes you see are sectional in nature, meaning the teardrop shapes are always oriented toward wind direction: the fork shaping is different than the head tube which is different than the down tube which is different than the seat tube and stays. This is all because the tubes are oriented differently toward the wind. A tube that is held nearly vertical against the wind, like the head and seat tubes, should be shaped differently than one that is nearly horizontal, like the chain stays, or one in between, like the down tube and seat stays.
Stiffness is also part of the design. With a tapered 1 1/8” to 1 ¼” steerer, and a downtube that has a morphing shape to the wide BB86 bottom bracket shell, there’s plenty of stiffness in the design. The Stiletto fork has a bulky crown for steering precision, but it tapers toward the tips for comfort. The wide-set stays and fork fit rims of any width and tires up to 25mm wide.
The flattened seat stays and round seat post contribute to comfort. The integrated clamp, designed to work with 31.6mm seat posts is hidden from the wind and improves aesthetics as well. The bike comes with no post, allowing you to choose what characteristics you want—some folks prefer a stiff post because it feels better climbing, while others prefer one with rearward flex designed in to take the edge off long days in the saddle.
Storck long ago realized that the forces bigger riders put on a frameset are greater than those from smaller riders. It is for this reason he embraced proportional tubing designs, wherein the dimensions and layup of the tubes changes over his size range. The small frames have smaller shapes and corresponding lay-ups and gradually move to larger shapes and corresponding lay-ups as the frames get larger. In this way, there is no “ideal” frame size; all the frames ride the same.
That ride is widely praised as outstanding. The position the frame sets up is more towards aggressive racing. With a longish top tube and shorter head tube. The ride is a bit on the aggressive side of neutral, with the rider feeling both great agility and a need to focus a bit on where one is going.
The frame comes in six sizes, for riders from about five-foot two to over six-foot three. As the bike is designed for both electronic and mechanical shifting, it comes with both stops and covers so you can choose. The headset is included.
