It's been a little bit since I last rode a Tallboy, but going off my somewhat fuzzy memories I'd say that the suspension does feel better than before - it's a little softer overall, which makes the bike more comfortable on choppy sections of trail.

Short-travel trail bikes have a reputation for being good climbers and, as a result, only fun on flowing descents. The Santa Cruz Tallboy CC X01 is the exact opposite. Can the 29" Californian with its conservative 120 mm rear travel keep up with the strong competition of our group test?

Quiet
Agile bike with stiff suspension
Climbs efficiently only with climb switch

THE AVERAGE GUY’S AVERAGE BIKE USED 2013 SANTA CRUZ TALLBOY LTc REVIEW Words by Ryan Salyer If you’ve been in this world a while you’ll know that keeping a budget can be tough. When you throw different circumstances into life; marriage, kids, broken

Back in August, Santa Cruz introduced the Tallboy as the latest bike in their lineup to migrate over to the newer "lower link VPP" suspension layout.
Feb 2020 · Logan Watts
The Santa Cruz Tallboy was revamped with 120mm of lower-link suspension and axle flip-chip that allows 10mm of chainstay adjustment and 29 x 2.6" tires.
Well engineered suspension redesign that makes it aesthetically pleasing and one of the most downhill-capable short-travel 29ers on the market
Clearance for 29 x 2.6” tires
Adjustable geometry with axle and shock flip chips
Purple colorway looks really nice
Santa Cruz preserved under downtube bottle mounts (bike has two pairs)
Odd build spec with a few cons (as detailed above under Build Kit)
Can get a little clumsy and wandering on steep climbs (especially for us long-legged riders)
Despite the lower linkage shock, it still has a relatively small frame bag space in the triangle
The internally routed cables exit the headtube pretty far forward which was a bit of an issue with a standard handlebar roll
Feb 2020
The new Tallboy isn't a cross-country racer, but that's not to say you couldn't enter a race with it. That being said, you could also take it down your local jump line just fine.
