Summary

The Salsa Warbird is a versatile gravel bike praised for its stability, comfort, and cargo capacity, with improvements in tire clearance and geometry over previous versions. It offers a smooth ride thanks to its Vibration Reduction System and is well-suited for long distances and rough terrain. However, some riders miss the quicker handling of earlier models and note issues with paint durability and speed wobble on descents.

Pros
  • Improved tire clearance and geometry for stability

  • Class-leading cargo capacity with multiple bottle mounts

  • Vibration Reduction System for a smoother ride

  • Versatile for both racing and bikepacking

  • Light and efficient with good power transfer

Cons
  • Paint/finish durability issues

  • Some riders prefer quicker handling of previous versions

  • Speed wobble on high-speed descents

  • Basic spec for the price on some models

  • Alloy steerer adds weight

Key Quotes
These tires are magical. Even though they are comparatively slick to the knobby Pace tires, they have incredible grip. They are also plush, fast, and shockingly tough.
BIKEPACKING.com

Bicycling

2020 Salsa Warbird Carbon GRX 810 gravel bike review: Ready for migration - CyclingTips

Apr 2020 · Dave Rome

There are few brands more influential in the gravel world than Salsa Cycles. And while it wasn’t Salsa’s first gravel bike, the Warbird was the model that helped kick off the market for performance-focused bikes designed to ride gravel, fast. We haven’t had many Salsa bikes through the doors of CyclingTips, however, our inaugural Gravel […]

Salsa Warbird 650b Review

May 2019 · Logan Watts

Joe Cruz and Logan Watts tested the V4 Salsa Warbird 650b during their Appalachian Gravel Growler ride and beyond. Here’s the full review...

Highs
  • Salsa made numerous improvements to Warbird v4 with added tire clearance, triple fork mounts, and more bottle bosses

  • A longer stance and slacker headtube angle provides added stability and comfort compared to v3

  • Similar to the Cutthroat, the vibration reduction stays keep the Warbird is quite supple, yet still fairly responsive

  • Lots of nice bells and whistles, such as internal routing, rack and fender mounts, and added sizes

Lows
  • Paint/finish seems a little fragile (finish rubbed off from bag straps pretty easily, over five days–this could be avoided using Shelter tape)

  • Some people might be bummed that the Warbird lost its ‘roadish’ quickness from v3 to v4. However, now there’s now a Warroad!

  • A little speed wobble on high speed paved descents (it could use a ViscoSet)
