OPEN WI.DE. gravel bike in review

May 2022 · By

The OPEN WI.DE. is a firm favourite of the group test since the bike won our previous gravel bike group test by a large margin. To defend its title, it enters this round on voluminous 650B tires and relies on a wireless mullet drivetrain from SRAM for the gears. A direct comparison with the 18 best gravel bikes of the year shows whether this is enough to beat the competition snapping at its heels.

Highs
  • Versatile frame platform

  • Voluminous tires offer comfort and traction

  • Fast engagement of the hub

  • ENVE AG28 rims provide plenty of support for big tires

Lows
  • Lack of efficiency on hardpack and asphalt

  • Limited precision of the fat tires

Open WI.DE. Review: The Last Bicycle?

Jun 2020 · Joe Cruz

Joe Cruz put the Open WI.DE. to a full test with 27.5" mountain bike knobbies in Colombia and 700C gravel tires in Vermont. Read his detailed review here.

Highs
  • Super quick handling very familiar from road bikes.

  • Buildable into a lightweight rocketship.

  • Refined and optimized construction from designers who have been creating top carbon bikes for over a decade.

  • Clearance for full on mountain bike tires for the roughest dirt and gravel roads; can go a long way beyond most gravel bikes on singletrack.

  • Very capable for a fast road ride or a road race with 700c wheels if you like quick handling.

  • A variety of bosses for cages, a gas tank bag, and a tool case under the bottom bracket.

Lows
  • If the WI.DE.’s sweet spot is not your primary riding niche, you probably don’t need this bike.

  • Notable wheel flop with 700c x 38mm tires.

OPEN WI.DE frameset review

Aug 2019

The brand new WI.DE (Winding Detours) gravel bike from Open takes wider tyres than the company’s original UP from 2015 and is all the better for it, with supreme speed over all sorts of surfaces, infused with great handling and low weight from the original it’s based on. But the price tag puts it off-limits for many and you can only buy it as a frameset with a choice of one colour.
