This Merida Silex 700 may be lower down the brand's gravel range of bikes but, with a mixture of some major tweaks to the geometry and overall design for 2024, plus a great selection of kit it is an affordable gravel machine which is capable of taking on more technical terrain than most. With some rather classy paint jobs the whole range looks great, too. The MERIDA catalogue says it’s an all-rounder, but covering everything from gravel racing to bikepacking sounds like quite a stretch. We put the new SILEX to the test.
Hard to beat in terms of fun
Sleek look
Enough mounting points for all eventualities
Top of the line components
Some riders don’t get along with the Easton handlebar

Full-carbon fork
Carbon-fibre seatpost
Hose-breakers and cable adjusters at cockpit for easy servicing
Removable hex-key quick release for bolt through axles

Internal routing stops at the bottom bracket
Doesn't come set up tubeless, and you need to supply your own valves
Heavy aluminium wheels
Tubeless setup of wheels was laboursome and leaky
Pressfit bottom bracket gained a creak after before 1000km

Easy to live with gravel and adventure bike that would benefit from better brakes and wheels
Good ride quality
Large spread of gear ratios
Decent tyre clearance
Brakes lack precision
Tall standover height
Tough competition out there
