Summary

The Lapierre XR series offers a mix of efficiency and comfort, tailored for cross-country and marathon racing. Its suspension design, particularly the OST+ system, provides excellent traction and a plush ride, though some models suffer from flex and tuning challenges with specific forks. The geometry leans towards stability and comfort, making it suitable for longer distances, but this can come at the expense of agility and weight.

Pros
  • Super-efficient drivetrain

  • Lightweight frame

  • Great traction without obvious bob

  • Progressive frame geometry

  • Superb suspension with good sensitivity and support

Cons
  • Upside-down RS-1 fork hard to tune and undermines control and confidence

  • Flexy frame along its length

  • Weight is a touch on the higher side for the price

  • Back end may feel a bit soft for power transfer

Key Quotes
Blisteringly rapid race/distance weapon, but the fork seriously undermines control and confidence.
BikeRadar logoBikeRadar
The XR descends sure-footedly and resists being bounced off line better than its featherweight rivals.

Lapierre XR 529 (2018) review - MBR

May 2018 · James Bracey

The 2018 Lapierre XR 529 is the bike Lapierre developed to meet the demands of XCO and Marathon cross country racing but it's a capable trail bike too.

Highs
  • OST+ suspension design ekes out every last mm of travel.

  • Geometry is less traditional XC race than many similar bikes.

Lows
  • Uninspiring wheels.

  • SRAM Level brakes feel agricultural.

  • Weight.

Lapierre's XR729 is a really well-balanced cross country and marathon machine that's impressively adept when it comes to descending, though full-on race heads might be put off by a weight that's a touch on the higher side when you consider the price tag.
