Summary
The Kona Hei Hei is a versatile cross-country bike that excels in acceleration, climbing, and handling, offering a playful and efficient ride. Its suspension is praised for being taut and balanced, though some reviews note a lack of plushness in the fork. The bike's geometry and design cater to both race and trail riding, making it a standout in its category.
Snappy, fast-accelerating, climb-happy beast
Playful and efficient
Corners well regardless of line choice
Suspension feels taut and balanced
Trail-friendly geometry and flex-pivot suspension
Would be better served by 29-inch wheels given its pedal-friendly intent
Fork's lack of plush, chatter-eating suppleness
Tight rear suspension
For backcountry fiends or for trail riders looking for snap and acceleration first and foremost, this is your bike.
The Hei Hei feels more like an XC bike on steroids–which it is.
Not your average carbon race bike
Short travel bikes that are made to be rallied are a blast to ride – and that’s the way Kona is presenting this bike

This carbon race bike handles crazy sections of trail crazy well.

I have to come clean right out of the gate. I was gifted this 2017 Hei Hei DL by Kona to be both a test steed for this rad rag and as a rider for their ambassador program. A conflict of interest, but I want you to know I am being as honest as I always am when writing my reviews. Kona Supergrassroots is a semi-pro team; 15 to 20 of us ride and race and send in media to be used as promotional whatnot.

A go-fast XC machine that's ready for fun, fast trail riding, but is let down by its fork, lockouts and tires. Buy if you're the type of MTBer who has way more skills than you do fitness and want to roll big epic rides and maximize the fun
Light, stiff, fast, fun to ride, high-end spec
RS-1 fork overwhelmed, thin tires, finicky lockouts, tight rear suspension

Is the Kona Hei Hei DL just like every other 100mm travel XC bike? Certainly not, and Wil explains why in his review of the carbon fibre green machine

The Kona Hei Hei Trail DL is a surefooted trail bike with category-crushing climbing chops.

For a number of years now, Kona has categorized their Hei Hei 29er as an XC or XC Race platform. It still falls under that category, though they’ve added XC Trail and MTB Trail to the naming structure. But that doesn’t really tell the whole story. Going back to 2012, the Hei Hei has been …

The Kona Hei Hei Race DL is the carbon-fibre version of the Hei Hei with Flex pivot suspension. Slack trail-friendly geometry for a short-travel 29er.
Fun and snappy ride that loves tight singletrack and smooth, flowing descents
The Trail version is slacker than this Race, with more travel up front, so it’s a better all-rounder
