Summary

The Giant Defy is celebrated for its smooth ride and versatility, making it a standout in the endurance road bike category. Its D-Fuse seatpost and handlebar significantly enhance comfort, while the bike's balanced handling and stiffness appeal to a wide range of riders. Despite some minor drawbacks like the Contact SL saddle's firmness and the 140mm disc rotors, the Defy's performance and integrated features like a power meter and accessory mounts make it a highly recommended choice.

Pros
  • D-Fuse seatpost and handlebar provide noticeable comfort improvements

  • Balanced handling for both uphill and downhill

  • Includes Giant’s in-house developed power meter

  • Lightweight and efficient with a smooth ride

  • Integrated accessory options like LED blinkers and bags

Cons
  • Contact SL saddle may feel flat and firm to some

  • 140mm front disc rotor may be insufficient for heavier riders

  • D-Fuse handlebar’s extremely short reach and shallow drop may not suit all riders

Key Quotes
Giant’s previous-generation Defy range broke new ground in 2014 by being the first complete range of endurance road bikes from a major manufacturer to exclusively offer disc brakes.
Cycling Tips logoCycling Tips
The Defy is Giant’s most popular road bike when it comes to sales, the everyman road offering.
BikeRadar logoBikeRadar
Overall the bike has a relatively impressive lateral stiffness score. It comes by way of a really stiff bottom bracket (stiffer, in fact, than the Giant TCR Advanced) and a rather flexy head tube, relative to other bikes tested in the lab.

When I picked up my bike it was set up with Giant’s own GPS, which had me wondering, but I switched that out for my trusty Garmin, synced in the power meter (which has a proper name not just a code number), calibrated it from my Edge 1030 in seconds and rode away without any hitches or surprises.. .

Giant’s previous-generation Defy range broke new ground in 2014 by being the first complete range of endurance road bikes from a major manufacturer to exclusively offer disc brakes. It was also a very nice bike, period, but also more of a toned-down road racer than a machine that was purpose-built for performance-oriented comfort. That’s all […]
