Going back to a hardtail – even one with progressive geometry like the Primer – required patience. The payoff was well worth it.
Progressive geometry (65 HA, long reach, short stays)
Steel frame gives smooth, silky pedaling feel
Excellent climbing efficiency for a hardtail
Good momentum and speed maintenance
DT Swiss wheels stiff, durable, straight
Fox 36 fork well-tuned with good small bump compliance and progressivity
Shimano XTR brakes powerful and consistent
XTR drivetrain shifting perfect
Race Face Turbine dropper flawless in cold weather
Chromag saddle comfortable on steep climbs
Chromag OSX bars durable with nice flex
Not nimble in quick side-to-side transitions
Technical climbing requires attention and good line choice
Cornering requires aggressive inputs
WTB Bridger tire rock grip only so-so, rubber not stickiest
Knobs small, less aggressive than desired for some conditions
Wheel/tire combo heavy, acceleration not violent
Brake performance affected in cold (squeal), possible contamination
