The Merida Big Trail 400 may not have some of the more boutique brands’ bits bolted to it, but it has absolutely nailed the essentials.

Rocking a burly 34mm Suntour fork, and rolling on the biggest, stickiest rubber on test, the Merida Big Trail 400 feels solid and well built.
Good tyres, excellent build quality, quiet. Neat fork fender.
Tall and steep, no seatpost QR, long brake levers, resin pad-only rotors.
