While it demands an assertive riding style, the Altitude rewards with exceptional grip and a racy feel.

Pros
  • Excellent rear wheel grip and stability

  • Supple yet supportive suspension with LC2R linkage

  • Adjustable geometry with Ride-4 system

  • Capable descender with excellent bump-eating capability

  • High-quality components and in-frame storage

Cons
  • Setup can be daunting for first-timers

  • Short dropper post out of the box

  • Some test riders felt in between sizing

  • Persistent, annoying rattle suspected to be from the dropper post

  • Requires careful suspension setup to avoid negative ride experiences

Key Quotes
The Altitude wants, maybe even needs to go fast. It wants you to be a driver, not a passenger.

The Rocky Mountain Altitude is a big bike that deserves – nay, demands – big terrain.
Loam Wolf logoLoam Wolf
The reinvented Altitude puts grip and comfort above support through the travel, but results in a bike that feels very well suited to steep and loose terrain at the cost of some predictability.

Jan 2025 · Ron Koch

From our first test ride, the new Altitude felt like a true race bike, but not one that was confined to the tape.

The Rocky Mountain Altitude enduro bike has a totally new suspension layout, and we put it to the test with a full season of riding.

Highs
  • Efficient climber for a big bike

  • Solid parts package

  • Slack geometry makes for a stable ride

  • Supple yet supportive suspension feel, and the Super Deluxe Ultimate shock is a standout

  • Budget-friendly aluminum builds for those who can’t afford carbon

Lows
  • Soft Race Face rims and noisy dropper post

  • A couple of early-adopter issues with frame hardware

  • Not the most playful bike out there

Review: The Rocky Mountain Altitude C90 Has Impressive Grip & Adjustability, But Isn't the Easiest to Work On

Aug 2024 · Dario DiGiulio

The new Altitude works best on steep, loose terrain, which makes sense considering where it was designed.

Highs
  • Excellent geometry with meaningful adjustments

  • Impressive levels of grip over loose terrain

  • Race ready out of the box

Lows
  • X2 shock tune feels too light for kinematic

  • Frustrating frame hardware

2024 Rocky Mountain Altitude Carbon 70 Coil Review: For a Smoother Ride, Go For the Coil

Rocky Mountain's 2024 Altitude Carbon 70 Coil offers plush suspension but delights on climbs with a deceptively lightweight ride.

Bike Review | Rocky Mountain Altitude

Jun 2024 · Spencer Astra

I have an affinity for bikes that mount the shock low on the frame. I’m not sure how much dropping the center of gravity legitimately affects how a bike handles, but it sure is easy on the eyes. So, as you can imagine, I was immediately a fan when I saw the new Rocky Mountain Altitude frame redesign. What’s more, the high-end C90 Rally Shimano build makes this an abundantly plush machine. Of course, the Altitude’s voracious appetite for speed is more important than its good looks. I was impressed by how well the bike climbed. Despite being burdened by thick Maxxis Double Down casing tires, CushCore tire inserts, and a front tire with Maxxis’ MaxxGrip compound, the Altitude scooted around efficiently. This left me wondering just how efficiently it would climb with a more trail-oriented tire setup.

Highs
  • Excellent rear wheel grip

  • Stable pedaling with LC2R platform

  • Climbs well for a race-ready enduro bike

  • Comfortable geometry for long climbs

  • Steep terrain tamer with 63.2° HA and 450mm chainstays

  • Exceptional cornering at speed

  • Balanced and predictable in the air

  • Stiff one-piece rear triangle for precise tracking

  • PenaltyBox 2.0 downtube storage works well

  • Cable routing is tidy and bike runs nearly silent

  • Effective mudguards on rear shock and linkage

Lows
  • Fox 38 small-bump performance sensitive to air pressure

  • 175mm dropper post insufficient; prefer 200mm

  • Wheelset: Race Face AR30 rims not strong enough for rear; flat-spotted

  • Shimano XT Trail brakes lack power for heavier riders

  • Stock 500lb spring too light for 202lb rider; needed 550lb

  • High weight (36lb) for a trail bike

  • Slow-speed low-angle performance not its forte

  • No X2 damper option tested on Fox 38
