There’s a thought gnawing at me, scratching gently at the bit of my brain where really good thoughts come from.
Ability to eat up rough trails without being totally compromised on easier terrain
Less able on technical rough terrain
Fork isn’t as sensitive as I’d like
Dropper lever only usable from drops
Freehub incredibly loud
Minor toe overlap

Giant’s popular Revolt gravel bike, now with a suspension fork, a dropper seatpost, and fatter tires.
Proven handling
A plush ride
Heaps of capability
Heaps of versatility
Mostly excellent components.
Can’t hide the weight or rolling resistance
Unrefined dropper seatpost
Gratingly loud freehub ratchet
Handling could be more daring.

Hugely capable for a gravel bike
Comfortable, bump-smoothing ride quality
The supple Fox 32 TC fork
Responsive but comfortable CXR X1 wheelset
Supple high volume tyres
Flip chip adds versatility
Huge array of mounting points
Dropper post lacks adjustability
Remote ergonomics could be better
Toe overlap may be an issue for some riders
Limited brake lever reach

The new Revolt's evolution of a highly successful recipe serves up some of the most fun you can have on a drop-bar bike
Stunning comfort and quicker, racier handling
GRX Di2 braking goodness
Lightweight wheels
Tyres that really aren’t suited to wet or muddy conditions

Thanks to a flip-chip in the dropouts, the wheelbase of the GIANT Revolt Advanced 0 can be adjusted by one centimetre. This affects both handling and tire clearance. A direct comparison with 18 of the best gravel bikes of the year shows whether this and the mechanical 2x11 Shimano drivetrain make the bike good enough all-round to beat the competition.
Predictable handling
You can tune the handling by adjusting the flip-chip
Plenty of mounting points
Dropper post compatible
Operation of the seat post clamp
Handlebar isn’t flared and the drops are too short
May 2022 · Guy Kesteven
Giant’s much loved soft-road gravel bike gets bigger tires, a smoother ride and more versatility, while losing weight
Super-smooth frame, post and bars
Light and quietly super-quick frame and wheels
Loads of bottle, rack, fender and bag mounts
53mm tire clearance
Close spaced gears and powerful brakes
Receptor tires are terrifying without adding speed
Stock steering is borderline sketchy off-road
No single ring options on any Revolt
