Rob's slackened Stache is a bittersweet reminder of both how awesomely fun these bikes are and how deserving the platform is of a progressive geometry reimaging by Trek.
Unique and distinctive design
Fun to ride, inspires smiles
Elevated chainstay is quiet
Sliding dropouts allow geometry experimentation
Balanced stiffness with big tires and proper fork
Climbs well out of saddle, descends quickly
Good value on used market
9point8 SLACK-R angleset improves handling noticeably
Stock tires (Bontrager XR2/Chupacabra) have weak sidewalls, not confidence-inspiring
Geometry is dated by modern standards (steep HTA, short chainstays)
Platform not updated/continued by Trek
Good Plus tire options are scarce
Stock i45 rims best suited for 3" tires, limiting tire choices
Frames not particularly stiff in rear end
No size-specific chainstays or reach distribution

Go-anywhere attitude with crazy levels of security and traction
Feels slower and heavier at times compared to ‘normal’ mountain bikes

Crikey, what on earth is this!? The words; 'full suspension', '29er' and 'plus tyres' just should never combine in one sentence, there's not enough space! Well, Trek has clearly ignored what you shouldn't do and have produced a bike that would seem impossible.
Limitless traction.
Easy to ride on hard trails.
Bloody good fun.
Big wheel woes.
Very terrain specific.
