Privateer's "trail bike" is not for the faint of heart nor the weak of limb
Planted and balanced at high speed in loose, rocky terrain
Buttery plush rear suspension with confident front-rear readability
Great cornering balance and stability options with adjustable chainstays
Surprisingly capable technical climber despite weight
Tractable and responsive suspension with good mid-stroke support
Burly, overbuilt construction with external cable routing and massive pivot hardware
Good price for the spec
Very heavy at 37+ pounds, saps energy on long climbs and flat terrain
Feels ponderous on smooth trails
Not nimble; heavy and awkward to muscle around
No UDH
Heel rub possible from huge chainstays

The 141 is a burly trail bike that was designed with reliability in mind.
Ability to run either rear wheel size or shock type
Robust, straightforward hardware
Excellent rear wheel tracking
On the heavy side for a trail bike
Drivetrain can impose some undesired feedback at the rear wheel
Not UDH compatible

Built for Speed, Privateer, amateur professional, racing for Team Mom and Dad—call it what you will but the idea is the same. Outside of pro mountain biking’s select upper echelon of well-paid, well-supported athletes, many if not most competitors are barely scraping by. This often means bumming rides to races, packing extra bodies into hotel rooms and cashing in favors when your gear needs servicing or replacement.
Value for money with smart component choices
Excellent descending performance, stable and planted at high speeds
Time-tested Horst-Link suspension
Progressive geometry with lengthy chainstays for stability
Good tires (Schwalbe Addix Soft) and high-end suspension (Fox 36 GRIP2, Float X DPX2)
Heavy at 34 lbs, not for climbing or KoM chasing
Sluggish climbing, requires focus to keep front wheel tracking
Pedaling efficiency sacrificed for descending prowess
Not playful or maneuverable at slow speeds or tight turns
Brakes (Magura MT5) felt too on/off
Externally routed cables, basic alloy parts

Companies like Privateer that push design outside the norm are favorites of ours, especially if it’s in the name of racing.

The Privateer 141 brings everything we liked about the 161 but puts it in a more trail friendly package. While it may not be the prettiest or lightest of bikes out there the Privateer 141’s user friendliness and excellent kit list, combined with its forward-thinking geometry result in a bike that's as versatile as it is fun, making it one of the best trail mountain bikes you can buy. Is this the ultimate trail bike?

From the park to the podium, the Privateer 141 does it all

Privateer 141 SLX/XT review: UK-designed trail bike promises to bring same big sizing and aggressive geometry concept as its 161.
