A conceptually sound bike, but by trying to please two very different styles of riding, by blending XC geometry and trail bike components, Merida has missed the mark
Supportive and bottomless-feeling rear suspension and the XT drivetrain performed flawlessly
RockShox fork is a known quantity
Geometry at odds with its spec and it's difficult to ride well when the trails get tricky
It's not as comfortable as it should be on the descents or climbs

Merida has built an absolutely ripping trail bike in the One-Twenty, and one that is bursting with value for money. It isn't perfect, but we still reckon this is one of the best trail bikes currently on the market. See why in for our long-term review of the 2020 Merida One-Twenty 700.
Such a zingy, energetic ride quality
Incredibly well balanced handling
Smooth and active suspension
Tough, confidence-inspiring front end
The bomber SLX groupset
Maxxis Minion DHR II front tyre is a winner
Water bottle clearance
You'll need to BYO rim tape and valves to go tubeless
Rear hub sounds a bit shit

Short-travel 29er bikes are the hot ticket for fast, fun trail riding. But how fast and fun is Merida’s Shimano XT loaded semi carbon, floated shock One-Twenty 9.7000?
Naturally smooth and agile ride feel
Relatively light
Lots of pedal bounce out of the saddle
Press-fit bottom bracket
No S or XL sizes in the UK

The Merida ONE-TWENTY 8000 goes against convention and delivers a versatile trail rocket that turns even the most boring trails into a playground.
Precise handling and engaging suspension
Great Spec for Trail Fun
Paint chips easily
Prologo saddle unpopular with all testers

By using wheelsize specific frames for the size S and M bikes, Merida gives riders the option of 27.5in or 29in wheels on the two smallest sizes.
Solid and fast
Needs a dropper post and better tyres

If you’ve got £2,000 to spend on a new bike and want a good all-round trail bike, you could do a lot worse than consider Merida’s One-Twenty 600. The 120mm travel 29er is a well-specced option with good geometry and suspension that combines to provide very good trail manners whether grinding up or slashing down. Best mountain bikes for under £3,000 - capable trail bikes that won't break the bank Is it worth converting your mountain bike to tubeless?
mag 2019 · Wil Barrett
Fully redesigned for 2019, the new Merida One-Twenty is a lightweight 29er full suspension trail bike with a zippy and fun-loving attitude.

feb 2019 · David Arthur
The One-Twenty is a short travel ripper that's surprisingly capable on the descents.
Fun and fast on the all-day rides and XC blasts
Impressively capable in the rough and technical stuff
Tough and burly equipment extends its range beyond traditional cross-country riding
Reach could be a touch longer
Travel will hold you back before geo and equipment does
The paint job and decals - sorry Merida, I’m not a fan
