Well-appointed, versatile and responsive, but the fork isn’t ideal for those above 80kg and the geometry is slightly short for serious terrain
Well-chosen and solid-performing tyres, brakes, wheels and drivetrain for the price
Geometry and cockpit kit create a relatively roomy feel and contribute to an agile ride that works on a wide variety of terrain
If you want to ride technical trails fast you may want more reach and a slacker head angle to boost stability
While the fork can work great, it’s beginning stroke is disproportionately firm if set up for heavier riders, affecting balance and traction

Successfully defending its 2018 title, the handsome Vitus Sentier 27 VR defies its sub £1,000 price point with the best spec, geometry and overall finish.
Great spec, fast, massively versatile and lightest on test.
No dropper post, cheap resin pad-only rotors.

If you’re after a do-it-all hardtail ready for rough and tumble riding, then the Vitus Sentier 29 VR hits the spot with a solid and well-thought-out spec for the cash and confidence inspiring handling paired to the big wheels. While the aluminium frame isn’t the most comfortable thing out there, budget for a dropper post and you'll have a superb ride. The best mountain bikes for under £1,000 - the best budget buys ridden and rated When should you replace your bicycle helmet? What's the best way to clean disc brakes on a bicycle?
