Specialized Diverge STR Expert review

sept. 2023

I’ve been quite happy for my gravel riding to remain a suspension free pursuit; well, I was until I spent a couple of months on Specialized’s Diverge STR Expert. With the brand's Future Shock treatment now extending to the rear end of the Diverge, not only is it one of the comfiest gravel bikes on the market, but that ‘boing-free’ rear end also aids traction on climbs and minimises fatigue. Though, I'll admit, its aesthetics are quite divisive.

août 2021 · Dale Tiessen

Riding ‘off road’ on a road bike is nothing new. I have seen lots of days-gone-by pics of Tour de France riders with a tubular slung around their shoulders riding dirt roads.

Points forts
  • Future Shock 2.0 provides effective small bump absorption for hands and body

  • SWAT box allows storage of tube, CO2, tire lever, and multi-tool inside frame, eliminating rear seat bag

  • GRX Di-2 1x drivetrain is wonderful and shift-by-wire is a first for reviewer

  • Roval Terra Carbon seatpost offers up to 18mm of compliance

  • Shortened stem with longer top tube creates comfortable riding position

  • Low and slack geometry (headtube angle similar to older 29er MTB)

Points faibles
  • Future Shock 2.0 is either on or off, with 6 clicks in the middle doing nothing

  • Future Shock 2.0 began squeaking audibly after about 5 rides

  • SWAT box provided bag does not fit larger gravel tube and 25g CO2 together with multi-tool

  • GRX chainrings minimum 40t and derailleur max 40t cog results in 1:1 gearing, inadequate for steep BC climbs

  • Stock tires are 38c, deemed too small for rough roads and singletrack

  • Factory spec lacks 650b wheels option even on flat bar EVO model

  • Specialized does not advertise the compliant seatpost as an overall feature

Proper gravel racer that belies its weight, and a blast to ride – plus the SWAT storage is a touch of class

Points forts
  • Excellent handling for tackling trails at speed

  • Future Shock 2.0 gives controllable damping

  • Large tyre clearance

  • Such a fun ride

Points faibles
  • Thin bar tape

  • Bit of a colour clash inside the fork legs

  • Tyres quite narrow and slick for typical UK conditions

  • Modern geometry contributes to super-stable ride quality

  • Every bike should have a SWAT box
