The first time I rode a fat bike, I didn’t get it. It was seven years ago, in a cold Oregon ski area parking lot scattered with tents, most demoing XC skis, and one with two weird-looking bikes on display. With a black steel frame and tires wider than anything I’d seen before, I was intrigued. I grabbed one for a demo thinking the monster-truck wheels could take me anywhere. A half-hour later and a couple hundred yards onto an ungroomed trail with a fresh foot of snow from the night before, I gave up.
