On its website, Propain boldly calls the Hugene the "one bike to rule them all." Has the German direct-to-consumer brand finally cracked the code?
Neutral, intuitive handling
Efficient climber
Lightweight
Lots of customization options in Europe
Sealed bearing covers
Less small-bump sensitivity than some bikes we tested
Ineffective frame port protection
Few customization options in the US

Custom bikes are awesome! The guys at Propain know this well and let you build your very own dream bike using their extensive configurator. This is also possible with their smallest family member, the Hugene, which offers 140 mm rear travel. For our test bike, we picked the burliest fork available in the configurator, a 150 mm FOX 36. Nevertheless, the bike still climbs like a rocket! But how does it fare against the competition of our big group test?
Very extensive configurator
A real rocket uphill
Demanding downhill
Very loud downhill
Poor paint quality

A perky climber that doesn’t shy away on descents and shows exceptional value to boot
Excellent climbing manners coupled with super capable descending prowess
Top-drawer kit leaves you checking price again and again
It’s a little prone to poor suspension balance, so needs care when setting up
