Going back to a hardtail – even one with progressive geometry like the Primer – required patience. The payoff was well worth it.
Progressive geometry, including 65-degree head tube angle and long reach
Excellent climbing efficiency for a hardtail
Good momentum and steady speed once spun up
Steel frame provides subtle flex and comfort
DT Swiss wheels remain true and stiff despite hard hits
Fox 36 fork with adjustable FIT damper performs well
Shimano XTR brakes powerful and consistent
Shimano XTR drivetrain shifts perfectly
Race Face Turbine Dropper post works flawlessly in cold weather
Chromag saddle comfortable for hardtail use
Technical climbs require A-game and are not the Primer's strength
Tires (WTB Bridger 3.0) have only so-so rock face grip and less aggressive side knobs
Cornering not particularly nimble for side-to-side transitions
Acceleration is not violent due to weight and wheel inertia
Brakes squeal in cold weather until warm up
