Min-Max: Rob's 2018 Trek Stache 29+

jul 2022

Rob's slackened Stache is a bittersweet reminder of both how awesomely fun these bikes are and how deserving the platform is of a progressive geometry reimaging by Trek.

Máximos
  • Unique design with elevated chainstay and sliding dropouts

  • Fun to ride, inspires smiles

  • Frames are quiet

  • Balanced stiffness with big tires and Pike/Mattoc fork

  • Climbs well out of the saddle

  • Fast descending

  • Rob's min-max build offers great value and performance

Mínimos
  • Stock tires (Chupacabra/XR2) have weak sidewalls, not confidence-inspiring

  • Geometry not progressive; steep head angle and short chainstays

  • Trek cancelled good Plus tires (SE4, SE2)

  • Limited Plus tire options on market

  • Carbon version may have hindered platform development

  • Frame not stiff in rear end

  • Stock i45 rims only suit Plus tires

Crikey, what on earth is this!? The words; 'full suspension', '29er' and 'plus tyres' just should never combine in one sentence, there's not enough space! Well, Trek has clearly ignored what you shouldn't do and have produced a bike that would seem impossible.
