Cons

Reviewed: 2021 Specialized Diverge Carbon Expert

ago 2021 · Dale Tiessen

Riding ‘off road’ on a road bike is nothing new. I have seen lots of days-gone-by pics of Tour de France riders with a tubular slung around their shoulders riding dirt roads.

Máximos
  • Future Shock 2.0 provides effective small bump absorption, rated A

  • SWAT box integration is a great concept, allows storing gear in downtube

  • Roval Terra carbon seatpost offers up to 18mm compliance

  • GRX Di2 drivetrain shifting is wonderful

  • Frame and fork have generous tire clearance (max 47c 700c, 2.1" 650b)

  • Geometry is low and slack, comfortable with long top tube and short stem

Mínimos
  • Future Shock 2.0 adjustment clicks do nothing; only on/off works

  • Future Shock squeaking after 5 rides

  • SWAT box bag too small for Specialized Tube Spool with large tube and CO2; needs customization

  • GRX 1x drivetrain has inadequate gearing (40t chainring, 40t max cassette) for steep terrain; required upgrading to 11-46t cassette

  • Factory tires (38c) are too small for rough gravel/light MTB; swapped to 44c

  • No factory model offered with 650b wheels

  • Gearing and wheels/tires rated C

Máximos
  • Excellent handling for tackling trails at speed

  • Future Shock 2.0 gives controllable damping

  • Large tyre clearance

  • Such a fun ride

Mínimos
  • Thin bar tape

  • Bit of a colour clash inside the fork legs

  • Tyres quite narrow and slick for typical UK conditions

Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon in bikepacking review

oct 2020 · Benjamin Topf

Bike giant Specialized sent us the Diverge Expert for our bikepacking group test. Designed as a gravel bike, it's been a talking point among bikepacking greats like Lael Wilcox since its introduction. Does it have what it takes to win our group test?

Máximos
  • High level of comfort

  • Very composed

  • Maximum efficiency at cruising speed

  • SWAT box in the down tube

Mínimos
  • Frameset not stiff enough for heavy luggage

  • Lack of precision in off-road corners on loose surfaces
