Resumen
The Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt is a versatile trail bike praised for its efficient climbing, playful yet capable downhill performance, and comfortable all-day ride quality. Its balanced geometry and Smoothlink suspension system contribute to snappy handling and a smooth ride. While it excels on flowy singletrack and technical climbs, some riders may find it less suited for aggressive descents or prefer updates like tubeless-ready rims and a dropper post.
Efficient climbing and playful downhill performance
Comfortable for all-day rides
Balanced geometry and Smoothlink suspension for snappy handling
Versatile on flowy singletrack and technical climbs
Stiff and efficient hydroformed frame
Relatively heavy XC setup
Lack of tubeless-ready rims and dropper post in some models

“The Thunderbolt has made my time climbing far more enjoyable than before, and I get a small sense of satisfaction by simply cruising past people on the way up the hill with a smile and a wave…”
Lightweight (~27 lbs) with low rotational mass from Crest rims and XT hubs
Excellent climbing efficiency and technical climbing agility
Comfortable upright seated position
Remote CTD lever for on-the-fly suspension adjustment
Supple Fox RP23 shock with progressive curve
Snappy corner exits when ridden actively
Zero frame issues over three months
Top tube slightly small for 5'10" rider
Fox 32 fork deflects in aggressive terrain
XT brakes fade in extended steep/chunky terrain due to small rotors
No dropper post (resolved on 2015 models)
Stock tires (Continental X-King 2.2") inadequate in wet/technical conditions

Over the last couple years the 27.5 shorter-travel (115-130mm) platform has been blurring the lines between XC and Trail categories. Rocky Mountain’s Thurnderbolt is designed to handle the rowdy side of XC riding, and is a capable setup for almost everything shy of Enduro racing. The aluminum frame has four available build specs, and I …
