When I picture what’s going on inside the mind of Chris Cocalis, I visualize endless rows of tall filing cabinets where tons of information are stored. There are childhood memories of water parks and go-kart tracks, details of motorbike adventures and notes about the best places to grab a cheeseburger, fries and frozen custard. There are the names of Pivot Cycles’ 100 employees globally (most headquartered in Tempe, Arizona) and athletes, what bikes they ride and even where some of them are racing on a given weekend. Then there’s an entirely separate room for bike data—from information about the first bikes he designed at Titus and competitors’ suspension platforms to athlete feedback and the details of frame manufacturing.

What a great few days we had on board this bike. The brand new Pivot Mach 4 SL lobbed into our life just a few days before the Port to Port stage race, giving us the perfect opportunity to test this bike as it’s intended to be ridden. This is Pivot’s cross country race machine …
