Specialized S-Works Diverge

Nov 2017

A redesigned frame with space for 42mm tyres, disc brakes, 1x11 Shimano Di2 gearing, Future Shock suspension and a dropper seatpost signal a lot of changes for Specialized's Diverge, but they add up to create one of the best adventure bikes I've ridden. It's a sophisticated ride with buckets of capability for going fast and tackling big journeys over varied and challenging terrain. First Ride: All City Cycles Space Horse Review: Marin Gestalt 2 gravel bike The original Diverge was launched back in 2014 at a time when the hype for the gravel and adventure category was still in its infancy.

First Ride: The all new Specialized Diverge with Future Shock

Jun 2017

Vernon, New Jersey probably isn’t one of the first places to pop into your mind when you think gravel bikes. Serving as the location for the Specialized 2018 road presentation though, the area’s roads and gravel turned out to be a perfect backdrop – especially for the launch of the new Diverge. One of the main reasons …

Specialized second-generation Diverge Comp review - CyclingTips

Jun 2017 · Matt Wikstrom

Specialized has updated the Diverge for 2018 with a deeper commitment to the bike’s off-road capabilities. The second-generation Diverge features a re-designed frameset that eschews Zertz elastomers in favour of a Future Shock suspension unit for the stem. There is more room for wider tyres and the geometry of the frame has been refined. And […]

Specialized Diverge Review - Asphalt Revisted

Sep 2016 · Cass Gilbert

We review the Specialized Diverge bikepacking, connecting paved roads and dirt roads on a bikepack through New Mexico's high desert.

Highs
  • Will make you wonder if you really need a road bike – its added versatility comes with little cost to compromise. It’s still a fantastically fun bike to ride on pavement.

  • Rack mounts add to its touring credentials, as do triple eyelets on the downtube.

  • Large volume tires offer comfort, corner with confidence, and still roll quickly on pavement. Why run anything skinnier?

  • Attention to detail, including a comfortable perch and padded bar tape. It’s a great complete package.

  • Broad range of sizes, from a petite 49cm to a gargantuan 64cm.

Lows
  • Carbon seatpost is suited to unladen riding but rules out seat clamp mounted seatpacks, like Porcelain Rocket’s Mr Fusion and Specialized’s own Burra Burra model. Other seatpacks work fine. Replacement aluminium seat posts are also cheap.

  • 1x drivetrain is limiting for anyone planning both laden bikepacking and fast day rides. If you intend to bikepack frequently, consider one of the double chainring models in the range.

  • Disappointing not to see water bottle mounts under the downtube, especially given the bike’s raison d’être. Water bottle mounts on the fork would have been nice too, as seen on the Sequoia, Niner RLT 9 and Jamis Renegade.
