Review: Knolly Chilcotin 170 - They Haven't Just Straightened the Top Tube

Apr 2024 · Henry Quinney

The Chilcotin rides (and looks) better than ever, but it's not without its quirks.

Highs
  • Excellent tracking with little feedback through your feet

  • Balanced geometry

  • Ultra long seatpost insertion

  • Muted and calm ride through fast chundery trails

  • Will hunt out grip on technical climbs

Lows
  • It felt too progressive for me when riding with the air shock

  • Punishes rear wheels on square edges

  • Not particularly snappy under accelerations

  • Spec could be more suited to the bike's capabilities

Mar 2021 · Nicole Formosa

The Knolly Chilcotin 167 was built to hold up to the worst (and best) that BC has to offer, and for riders who expect nothing less.

Highs
  • Unmatched stability -Frame and hardware are built to last -Good value -Respectable climber for its weight and travel

Lows
  • May be too much bike for some -Not the all-rounder some enduro 29ers are

The new Knolly Chilcotin, a bike to ride up, over and blast down the mountains. Details live now on NSMB.com.

Highs
  • Re-designed with 29" wheels, adjustable travel (151-167mm), and 63.8° head angle

  • Straight seat tube allows long dropper post insertion (can run 200mm on size medium for 5'9" rider)

  • Two shock mount positions (Neutral/Slack) change bike character quickly

  • Internal cable routing with purposeful ports

  • Titanium suspension hardware with torque specs

  • Knolly's patented suspension kinematics

  • Short chainstays (436.5-438mm) for stability and maneuverability

  • Dawn Patrol build with Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate and Zeb Ultimate

  • Extra Credit build with Fox suspension

  • Chromag contact points (stem, bars, saddle, grips)

  • Sram Code brakes (though R model levers less ideal)

  • MaxGrip DD tires (Assegai/DHR II) for worry-free descending

  • Spank wheels and hubs durable and trouble-free

  • SRAM GX drivetrain reliable and affordable

  • Comfortable climbing position with ample traction

  • Bike felt more manageable than numbers suggest

  • Quiet operation

  • Good value at $5300 USD / $6880 CAD

Lows
  • Bottom end Sram Code R brakes have less ideal lever feel compared to RS or RSC

  • MaxGrip DD tires slower on climbs due to weight and drag

  • Spank hubs not particularly fast-engaging, rims not light

  • Reverb dropper least favourite on market
