Surly Sorceress Review: Trail Magic?

apr 2026 · By Neil Beltchenko

In Neil's Surly Sorceress review, he details his time with the brand's newest hardtail and how its unique design surprised him...

Highs
  • Really well-balanced geometry

  • Incredibly comfortable tubeset

  • 200mm dropper + lots of standover

  • Singlespeed compatibility (DUH dropout) + rides great set up SS

  • Simple, durable, and thoughtful specs

  • Still capable of light bikepacking

  • Great value, especially the frameset

Lows
  • Heavy

  • Limited frame space

  • Not a bikepacking-first design

  • Eagle 90 driver and DB6 brakes are underwhelming

  • No seat tube or down tube mounts

  • Stock singlespeed gearing is steep

  • Lots of tools to swap out DUH dropout

Surly Midnight Special Review: If it Ain't Broke...

feb 2026 · By Nic Morales

In his Surly Midnight Special review, Nic takes this newly updated classic through its paces to determine whether it's still relevant today...

Highs
  • Exceptional ride quality, especially given the price.

  • Dual wheel size compatibility and clearance are still relevant a decade on, albeit unofficially.

  • Despite being an all-road bike, the frame has an appropriate number of mounts that pair well with the steel fork version for an all-action bikepacking rig.

  • The unique thru-axle delivers versatility and utility.

  • Simple, elegant, and timeless design.

Lows
  • The carbon fork feels like it’s one feature—the crown eyelet—away from being a real asset.

  • The supplied build kit feels useless to anyone save for pavement-focused riders.

  • The higher-end build kit is a little pricey, though it’s difficult to mark that as a con given both the $2,500 steel fork and $1,099 frameset options.

  • If you’re not a fan of 650B wheels, this might not be the best option for you.

Surly Straggler Review: First Update in a Decade + 11 Thoughts

sep 2025 · By Neil Beltchenko

After a decade, Surly’s cult-classic drop-bar do-everything bike finally got a thoughtful refresh. Find our full Surly Straggler review here.

Highs
  • A long-overdue update that still stays true to Surly’s DNA

  • Modern geometry changes are refreshing

  • New dropout design replaces the old headache-inducing one

  • Solid component spec on the 1×11 build

  • Lots of compatibility (dropper, 2x, suspension fork, fenders, racks)

Lows
  • Front-center is a touch short for my liking

  • Direct 160mm flat-mount brakes (while future-proof) won’t work on many aftermarket forks

  • Toe overlap is pretty bad

  • Could use a few more mounts (especially on the fork)

  • Not setup tubless out of the box
