Summary
The Specialized Epic is a highly regarded cross-country bike, praised for its quick ground coverage, nimble handling, and competent rear suspension. Its Brain auto-lockout system and carbon front triangle contribute to a smooth, efficient ride, making it a favorite for fast, all-day trail outings. While it excels in performance and efficiency, some reviews note minor drawbacks like pedal smacking on rocky trails and a lack of a thru-axle up front.
Quick ground coverage
Nimble handling
Competent rear suspension
Brain auto-lockout system
Carbon front triangle for stiffness and lightness
Pedal smacking on rocky trails
Lacks a thru-axle up front
Rear tire could have more bite
The Epic joins the very short list of 29er bikes that play nicely with tight terrain.
The Specialized Epic Comp Carbon 29 is an excellent companion for those fast, all-day cross-country trail outings when you've got a lot of ground to cover and little time to do it.
The Brain genuinely does work: dial in the bump threshold to your desired level of firmness and there’s zero visible movement on smoother ground whether you’re deftly spinning away in the saddle or mashing gears out of it.

Whitman is setting no specific time goals for 2011. Instead he simply hopes to "have a great race and feel strong during the last few miles on the Boulevard. If that happens it will mean I was able to stay with the top guys for a good portion of the race. That would be satisfying."
