The R/1 semi-aero road bike is comfier than you’d guess and also comes across as more polished than the A/1 I reviewed recently, but it still feels a touch underbaked.

A racy aesthetic paired with relaxed geometry gives the R/1 the best of both worlds, but it's the material that takes centre stage
Magnesium frame is environmentally conscious
Lighter than aluminium and provides a good ride feel
Cable integration isn't great
Pimples appeared on test frame
Heavier and dearer than carbon equivalent
No colour choice with spec

As far as the best gravel bikes go, carbon fibre is the go-to material when it comes to frame and fork construction. And while it does have many benefits, metal frames can deliver an equally impressive riding experience, too, and I’m not talking about aluminium, steel or titanium here but rather magnesium. Yep, you read that right. The Vaast A/1 Allroad gravel bike represents a different take on the gravel bike recipe; a left-field, high-value option poised to do battle in what has become a rather claustrophobic space.

Mid-cycle updates have improved the A/1, but the frame geometry is still a little too goofy for our liking.
Excellent frame build quality, high-tech magnesium tubing, high-end aesthetic, solid build kit, nearly 100% plastic-free packaging, good value.
Goofy frame geometry, non-tubeless tires, mysteriously slow-feeling, slightly too-tall gearing.

Overly complex in this guise
Very expensive
