TESTED: Trek Supercaliber 9.8

Jan 2021

Looking for an end-of-summer riding goal in a season void of events and races due to COVID-19, my wife and I landed on an ambitious project. Colorado’s Leadville 100 MTB and the 144-mile SBT GRVL (Steamboat Gravel) had originally been scheduled for the same weekend in August, and inspired by various “virtual” alternatives to in-person events, we made plans for a Vermont-based LeadBoat. The mountain bike day, a 105-mile loop we plotted around Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest summit and the view from our doorstep, would link together long stretches of dirt road with as much singletrack as possible. It also would be the longest mountain bike ride I’d ever done and require a lightweight bike that could readily tackle 100 miles and more than 10,000 feet of elevation gain.

I am 5'9 and in my 50's, size chart says MD/LG at that height. But, I used to measure 5'10 so my arms/legs fit the LG frame nicely which is what I ha

Highs
  • This bike just wants to go fast, and it urges you to push it. It climbs great and allows you to pedal higher gears while responding with snap and letting you get on top of your cadence.

  • It handles medium tech really well, handles and turns great.

Lows
  • I find it can get knocked off line in thick tech a bit which can make you struggle at times.

  • I really disliked the bike at first until I spent some time on bike tune. I was typically a set it and forget it suspension rider and took settings right from the bike shop. However, it is really important on this bike to have your tire pressure, shock pressures and rebound set for your ride style. Once I got that figured out, loved the bike.. until then.. it was really beating me up and wearing me out and I was thinking of switching it out for something else.

  • I took the time to learn how to setup suspension and through trial/error found my optimum settings.

  • That said in some races, if my setup is a bit off it can make for a rough day. So, learn your setups for smooth - light tech - high tech and tweak as needed and you'll get the most out of this bike every time.
