The storied Specialized Stumpjumper EVO—arguably the most famous mountain bike model in the history of our sport—is back for 2021, and the newest incarnation feels more refined and adjustable than ever before. With a headtube angle that’s adjustable from 65.5 degrees all the way down to 63 degrees, and a bottom bracket with height adjustability from 32 millimeters of drop to a ground-hugging 39 millimeters of drop, the new Stumpjumper EVO Expert we tested comes with multiple geometry options that can radically change its personality on a wide variety of terrain. The 2021 Stumpjumper EVO certainly has retained some of the climbing characteristics of its previous iteration. Specifically, it’s a bike that is far better to climb in the seated position than hammering out of the saddle—a trait attributed to the FSR suspension platform, which gives impressive traction through chunky terrain while climbing in the seated position. While climbing in the seated position, my weight felt balanced between the front and rear wheels, allowing me to stay comfortable and in control on even the steepest of climbs. I found the lowest bottom-bracket setting to be the best for climbing, as it extends the chainstay dimensions, adding to its overall stability. When it came to dialing in the compression on the super-active Fox Float DPX2 Performance Elite shock, I preferred switching it into the middle setting on the climb switch to slightly stiffen the pedaling platform.

Specialized’s Stumpjumper Evo Expert is a lightweight carbon daily driver with downhill geometry, but does that work on the trail?
Rad-to-mad geo and shock adjustment
Excellent suspension control
On-point frame feel
Decent weight
SWAT
Practical, protective details
Sorted kit package
Full size range
Power phase is soft in open mode
S-Works frame is a lot more cash for just a 35g weight saving
Tires are dry biased
Shorter stem please

We’ve seen a number of captivating launch videos lately. Everything from edits packed with incredible riding, to cinematic masterpieces. Looking to produce something worthy of their new Stumpjumper EVO, Specialized just took things to another level with a video simply called The Stumpjumper EVO. It makes you wonder – is this really the golden age of mountain biking?

With the new Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper Evo, Specialized revamps its most radical trail bike to date. More sizes and multiple geometry configurations.
Genuinely progressive sizing and geometry from a mainstream brand. A weapon on the descents but still versatile enough for all-round trail riding. Adapatable through the use of flip-chips and offset headset cups.
How much for the S-Works model? Butcher/Eliminator tyre combo seriously hampers the Evo's shred-ability.

The new Stumpjumper EVO gets a little more travel and a lot more adjustable. There's also extra snack space.
Wide range of effective adjustments that can quickly transform how the bike feels.
Light weight, allows for burly components to be installed without turning it into a tank
Well sorted frame - clever, useful features.
The price of this one is going to be a con for most people, but keep in mind that there are other more affordable models that are still well spec'd
It could use an even longer travel dropper, but there's not an AXS post longer than 170mm.

Further refinement, greater adjustability, and 10mm of additional travel highlight the new Stumpjumper EVO – a bike Specialized is calling 'The Ultimate Trail Bike.' From park laps to big pedal missions, Vital tested it in a wide variety of terrain.
