It is true, with all the wiz and fanfare around electric mountain bikes these days occasionally we still hear a little pessimism from the odd naysayer out there… Sure, there will always be your traditional let us say ‘naturally aspirated’ MTB riders out there who at times may have a different opinion on the modern age of e-Bikes with claims akin to; “They don’t handle that well,” or “They are too heavy.” And to be fair those statements have at […]

An e-MTB with an 80-mile range that gives you twice your power — at nearly the same weight — as a traditional trail bike.

There is no doubt that Specialized, with their top-of-the-range S-Works model, has set a standard that is absolute when it comes to e-MTBs

The Specialized Turbo Levo SL Comp Carbon is a sleek, light and very useable take on the e-bike. The motor might be less powerful than most, but it also has far less mass to push, it's smooth and the battery lasts really well. The spec – in particular the fork – holds it back on rowdy trails and the geometry verges on dated, but for flowy trails and long adventures, the 'superlight' e-bike concept is a winner.

With a bigger battery and beefier fork can the new Specialized Turbo Levo Expert Carbon retain it top-status in the e-mountain bike market?
Smooth, responsive and powerful. Superb integration and brilliant battery range.
Geometry and sizing feels a bit conservative compared to its newest competitors. Expensive considering the parts package.

Only 240 watts. Only 38 pounds. Welcome to the gray area.

Over the past few months I’ve been hearing some chatter about a new Specialized e-bike rumored to tip the scales at only 38 pounds. As the brand was already leading the charge with lightweight e-bikes that didn’t come as a huge surprise, but weight aside, I knew very little about the bike until recently. Taking on a silhouette similar to the current Levo, which follows the form of the latest Stumpjumper, this new Levo SL looks familiar – on the surface anyway. However, upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the downtube and motor area are a bit slimmer … small

Price: $8250.00 | Model Year: 2019 | A lighter, stiffer, even more powerful second generation Turbo Levo platform, custom side-arm rear suspension design improves cable routing, tubeless ready rims and tires, unique hidden SWAT multi-tool under stem cap
A lighter, stiffer, even more powerful second generation Turbo Levo platform, custom side-arm rear suspension design improves cable routing, tubeless ready rims and tires, unique hidden SWAT multi-tool under stem cap
29er wheel size with narrower 2.6" tires reduce friction and improve steering precision, new battery design provides higher capacity for improved range, two colorways, four frame sizes, vast network of dealers, great warranty
Brose Drive S MAG (magnesium) is lighter, smaller, more powerful, and even more efficient than older aluminum motors but just as smooth and still very quiet, works with Mission Control smartphone app, new Shuttle mode adjusts torque at lower pedal cadence for slow steady climbs
Improved control interface is easier to reach on the top tube and can be set to stealth mode so no LED lights shine while riding, control ring allows you to adjust assist without taking your hands off of the grips, still no locking core to protect the battery against theft, single-shift SRAM triggers protect the drivetrain but feel slower and less satisfying than multi-shift
