Canyon’s new Spectral CFR gets a significantly lighter frame and premium kit but it’s still a proper trail brawler when things get rough
300g frame weight saving over standard Spectral CF
Still seriously stiff and precise
Premium light but stiff DT Swiss carbon wheels to match
Balanced, confident geometry
Full Factory Fox suspension for outstanding damping
XTR gears and upsized brakes
Vast amounts of reinforced, wide tire traction
Noticeable pedal bob in open
Too much tire for really fast climbing
No lighter shock and fork option
One-piece cockpit fixed feel and GPS/lights compatibility
Some brake imbalance and ‘hidden’ XT cassette
No 27.5 or mullet CFR options

At 150mm of travel front and rear, coupled with relatively modest geometry numbers, the Spectral:ON slots itself into the all-rounder/playful trail bike category. Reviewer // Blake Nielsen Photos // Matt Staggs Given the Spectral:ON’s geometry package and its amount of travel which category does the bike slot into and what type of rider is it aimed at? While the suspension package is very capable, it’s not put together to be a self shuttle’able downhill bike. It’s very nimble in the […]

A one bike quiver is an attractive strategy for the budget-conscious mountain biker. Besides the obvious savings, owning a single bike means you’ll have less to keep track of when it comes to maintenance. Keeping up with suspension service intervals, brake pads and chain wear is easy with just one bike in the garage. Deciding which bike, among the hundreds of available options, to make your one-and-only is a more difficult equation. Canyon’s Spectral 29 CF 9 is described by the German company as a “true all-rounder for all off-road conditions.” For a rider like me who loves the simplicity of a bike that can handle just about anything, Canyon’s vision statement is one I can get behind. So, eager to see how the Spectral would fare on Bellingham’s diverse terrain, I put it through its paces—riding everything from ultra-fast low-angle trails that are common close to town, to steeper lines farther afield. Our test model arrived with 150 millimeters of progressive rear travel and a 150-millimeter RockShox Pike Ultimate fork. Before we go on, one important note regarding spec: Riders who purchase the Spectral 29 CF 9 in North America will receive a slightly different build kit with a Fox DPX2 shock and a slightly longer 160-millimeter Fox 36 Factory fork instead of the RockShox setup included on the bike I received for the purpose of this review. In my experience, bikes with around 150 millimeters of travel and more usually come with trade-offs, mainly in that they don’t pump or have the agility and efficiency of shorter travel models.

The Canyon Spectral 29 is all-new for 2021, and arrives to fill an important gap in the German brand's full suspension lineup. Far from being the same old Spectral with big wheels jammed in though, the new Spectral 29 features a new carbon frame and some of the most radical geometry we've seen to date from Canyon.
Lovely low-slung and space efficient frame design
Canyon's most progressive geometry to date
Masses of high-speed poise
Stiff carbon chassis keeps things snappy and lively
Tidy cockpit and headset integration
Robust, no-nonsense build kit
Not as jibby as its 27.5in sibling
Can be a little pingy and uncomfortable at slower speeds
Dropper post cable actuation is quite heavy
Those darn rattly brake pads
