Summary
The Canyon Exceed is a lightweight, efficient cross-country bike designed for speed and agility, particularly on tight, twisty trails. It offers impressive components for the money, with a focus on direct power delivery and sharp handling. However, it may lack comfort on rough terrain and versatility compared to some modern XC bikes.
Lightweight and efficient design
Sharp handling on tight trails
Impressive components for the price
Less comfortable on rough terrain
Not as versatile as some competitors
Limited opportunities for test rides due to direct-to-consumer model
Astounding value with an impressive kit list
Canyon’s new Exceed hardtail is aimed at vanquishing long-distance stage races, such as the Cape Epic, and blitzing short-course XC sprints.
The last time I rode a hardtail race machine was exactly a year ago at the 10@Kirroughtree race, and it was such a terrifying experience I switched to a 30lb trail bike with 150mm forks after one lap.

We’ve seen a few high-profile XC hardtails released in the past month. BMC twisted out the Twostroke, a modern yet measured approach to a category that is still relevant, but takes a back seat to full-suspension. On the other hand, Orbea dropped the Alma, a purist’s race machine that takes a spare-no-expense approach to making…

Is this the lightest bike ever made with Unicorn Hair? Maybe for an XC hardtail, that is. Check out the new Canyon Exceed CFR!

A fast-handling bike that’s exceptionally good value, but is best suited to tight, twisty tracks
Impressive components for the money
Snappy acceleration and handling gives a peppy, involving ride in tight terrain
Skittery feel over high-frequency chatter and not the comfiest ride, limiting speed in some situations
Direct-to-consumer model means limited opportunities for test rides, and only remote back-up if anything goes wrong

The Canyon Exceed CF SL 7.0 Pro Race is one of those bikes that is helping to redefine a complete genre of mountain biking.
Sprightly climbing.
Compliant and not as harsh as you might expect.
Component spec.
Reach could be a fraction longer.
Rear Ikon tyre too ready to break traction under power.

The Canyon Exceed is a light, fast and beautifully smooth carbon hardtail. Then we added a dropper post and fat tyres to see how hard we could push it.

[ad3] This time we tested the Canyon Exceed CF SLX 9.9 Pro Race, a hardtail 29er whose frame weights only 870gr. It is 300gr lighter than the previous model, the Grand Canyon SLX, which weighted 1170gr. Though it was showcased in August 2015, on this bike Alban Lakata had already won the 2015 marathon World Championship during the Sellaronda Hero at Selva di Val Gardena. Specs The Exceed Cf SLX 9.9 Pro Race was supplied as in the catalogue. The fork is a 32mm RockShox RS-1 with X Loc remote on the bar. The transmission is a SRAM XX1 groupset
